Lip Blush Aftercare and Healing Stages

3 min read

Lip blush heals in stages, and what you do in the first days and weeks shapes how your color settles. This guide follows Val’s aftercare instructions for lip blush, from the evening of your appointment through about 8 weeks of healing. If you are still getting ready for your appointment, start with our guide to preparing for your permanent makeup appointment. Having brows done too? Brows use a different ointment, so see our eyebrow aftercare guide.

Lip Blush Aftercare at a Glance

The Evening of Your Appointment

Later that evening, hold a clean, damp piece of paper towel against your lips with gentle pressure for 1 minute. This draws off lymph that has built up on the surface. Press, do not rub.

The First 24 Hours

For the first 24 hours, skip workouts, tanning, facial treatments and spas, and do not touch or clean your lips. Val will go over anything specific to eating and drinking at your appointment so you know what to expect.

After 24 Hours: Gentle Daily Cleansing

Once the first 24 hours are up, start washing the area gently once a day with a mild cleanser. Do not scrub, and avoid anything with exfoliants, including lip scrubs.

Keep Your Lips Moisturized: Vaseline or Coconut Oil

Brows heal with an antibiotic cream, but lip blush clients use Vaseline or coconut oil instead. Val will tell you how often and for how long to apply it when she reviews your aftercare.

What Healing Looks Like: Flaking, Color Loss and Color Changes

While your lips heal, expect flaking, some loss of color and color changes. All of this is normal. Your color will move through stages from dark to light before it settles into its intended shade, so your lips will not look like the final result while they are still healing. Do not pick or peel flaking skin.

Weeks 1 to 8: Protect Your Color

Until you are fully healed, about 8 weeks, do not use Retin A or any strong skincare products on or near your lips. For at least 8 weeks, keep sunscreen and exfoliants off the treated area. Once the 8 weeks are up, sunscreen is recommended.

When you are healed, see How Long Does Permanent Makeup Last? for ways to keep your color looking fresh.

If You Had Dark Lip Neutralization

If you had an Initial Dark Lip Neutralization, follow the instructions Val gives you at your appointment. This treatment also has its own follow-up, the Dark Lip Neutralization 4 Week Touch Up.

Your 4 Week Touch Up

Lip color is built in stages. About 4 weeks after your first appointment, a 4 Week Lip Touch Up lets Val refine your shape and color once the first round of healing has settled. Learn more in Why You Need a 4 Week Touch Up and What a Yearly Refresh Does.

After Healing: Keep Your Lips Fresh

A Yearly Lip Blush Touch Up keeps your color looking fresh and even, year after year.

How long does lip blush take to heal?

Full healing takes about 8 weeks. During that time your lips flake, lose some color and change color, moving from dark to light before settling into their intended shade.

Can I use Vaseline on my lips after lip blush?

Yes. Val recommends Vaseline or coconut oil for lip blush clients, rather than the antibiotic cream used for brows.

Is it normal for my lips to flake after lip blush?

Yes. Flaking, loss of color and color changes are a normal part of healing. Do not pick or peel.

When can I wear sunscreen on my lips after lip blush?

Keep sunscreen off the treated area for at least 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, sunscreen is recommended.
